高品位の瀝青炭を生産、硫黄分は1.3％以上で、南下すると硫黄含有量が低くなる
Illinois Basin
硫黄分は一般に高く、北から南に向かって水分が減少し、発熱量が高くなる
Powder River Basin
全般的に水分が多く(20%前後)、発熱量は8000～10000Btu程度の亜瀝青炭
Uinta Basin炭
一部火成岩の貫入するところでは、14000Btuのコークス性を有する石炭を産出
